Voltage detecting systems in medium voltage switchgear are now generally standard, providing an additional safety feature. These voltage detecting systems use a capacitive output from an insulator or elbow through coax cable, enabling a reliable connection and visual display. The WEGA VDS units are three-phase, maintenance-free voltage detecting systems which are designed to indicate the following operating voltage stages in medium voltage switchgear installations:


  • Voltage present: an arrow appears for each phase

  • No maintenance required: additional dot appears for each phase

  • No voltage present: no indication

  • Self test function: confirming the unit is in working order


WEGA 1.2 C is particularly and ideally suited for use with the Smart series of fault indicators to provide a voltage reference so this data may be fed back to SCADA.  The built-in Display Test Function provides verification of the display and will confirm that voltage is not present for local operation. These systems also have outputs to check the capacitive voltage with another device, enabling phase sequence checking with another supply. These devices are now considered standard on all new medium voltage ring main units and are common in other switchgear. They may be retrofitted into most existing switchgear and can allow for output relays, enabling remote monitoring of voltage presence.

ORION 3.1 and ORION M1 are monitoring and indication devices for voltage detecting, phase monitoring and coupling part testing according to IEC 61243-5. They are used at LRM and HR interfaces in medium voltage switchgears.

The ORION M1 features a large LCD display with backlight. It allows easy reading of the measured values, e.g. current, phase angle and harmonic voltage measurements. The integrated USB interface is used to retrieve the stored data results for further evaluation.

Besides the information on the next maintenance test and the indication of the battery status, the ORION M1 device provides the user with an easy to use menu.
